Don’t drown in toxic smoke!

Just two to three breaths of toxic smoke and you're unconscious

Toxic smoke will affect your ability to breathe, a sensation similar to drowning

Drowning in the smoke of a house fire is the risk you take if you do not have a working smoke alarm

Testing your smoke alarm every week could make the difference in protecting your home and loved ones

People vastly underestimate the impact of toxic smoke

How long do you think you could survive in a smoke filled room?
In a Fire Kills survey (2009) almost half (43 percent) believed they could survive for more than two minutes in a smoke filled room. However, toxic smoke can kill a child in under a minute.

Do you believe that if you had a fire you would be alerted by the smell of smoke? Nearly half of those surveyed (48 percent) thought they would be, when in actual fact the gases and smoke from a fire can numb the senses and put you into a deeper sleep.

The only way to buy vital time to escape from a house fire is by having a working smoke alarm. Although 90 percent of those surveyed owned smoke alarms, 70 percent admitted to not testing them every week. This is despite the fact that you are more than twice as likely to die in an accidental house fire if you do not have a working smoke alarm.

Ask the experts. Northamptonshire Fire & Rescue Service offer free home fire safety checks. This includes identifying potential fire risks, giving advice on what to do to reduce or prevent them, and will fit free smoke alarms if they are needed.  Call 0800 38 999 50 today or email safetycheck@northantsfire.org.uk.

Crime busting project moves to Delapre/Far Cotton

A partnership scheme aimed at reducing crime and improving the quality of life for local people is moving in to the Delapre/Far Cotton area of Northampton.

The Safer Stronger Northampton Partnership has launched the Safer Delapre Project to cut crime and anti-social behaviour and improve the living environment for local people.

The first phase has already begun - the roll-out of state-of-the-art Smartwater marking kits to nearly 1,600 homes in areas where acquisitive crime such as burglary and vehicle crime has been high in the past.

Officers and staff from the Northamptonshire Police local Safer Community Team and representatives from the Safer Stronger Northampton Partnership have already called at around 500 homes to offer the residents Smartwater packs and give them advice about keeping their homes and vehicles secure.

Later on in the scheme, local people will be consulted on environmental and other improvements that they would like to see in their community.

The partners involved are aiming for the Safer Delapre Project to bring the same lasting reductions in crime and community improvements that have been seen in Thorplands – where work was carried out last year – and in Lings and Lumbertubs, where a similar project is on-going.

The Thorplands Safer Stronger Scheme, which began in December 2008, is credited with bringing reductions in crime that are still on-going, six months after the project formally ended.

For Northamptonshire Police, the project is also part of Operation Guardian, which is successfully targeting serious acquisitive crime.

Inspector Steve Lingley, South West Sector Commander for Northamptonshire Police, said:  “This partnership working has been really successful in other parts of the town and we are now bringing the benefits to Delapre. We want to have a similar impact on crime in this area and deploying Smartwater across the area is a great deterrent to would-be offenders.  I hope people in Delapre embrace the scheme as they have in other parts of the town.”

The teams from the Safer Stronger Northampton Partnership will be door-knocking again in the area this week (Thursday 21 January) to encourage even more residents to take up Smartwater.

Councillor Paul Varnsverry of the Safer Stronger Northampton Partnership will be among those taking the kits to local people.  He said:  “In Northampton we have had some great examples in Thorplands, Lings and Lumbertubs of how well organisations can work together and involve local people in improving an area.

“We have high hopes that we can see the same benefits in Delapre in terms of less crime and a better quality of life.”

The Safer Stronger Northampton Partnership consists of Northampton Borough Council, Northamptonshire Police, Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service, Northamptonshire County Council, Northamptonshire Probation Service and other partners.

Safe winter driving

NCC and MGWSP, the highways service provider, are looking to ensure people are aware of weather conditions and drive appropriately this year. Our winter season began in October and runs through until April.

They've produced a Safer Winter Driving leaflet to help with the campaign.

Below is link to the leaflet being distributing around the county:-

Safer Winter Driving

Updates throughout the winter will be available on the NCC website and on the MGWSP website and the media are helping too.

Paper copies are available on request from

Jobs for young people supporting your community

DBFC has been working with BTCV, the Borough Council, the Friends of Hunsbury Hill Country Park and the Abbey Centre to secure some of the governments 'Future Jobs Fund', which funds 6 month placements for unemployed people aged 18 - 24. These placements must involve work in local communities.

BTCV will run a team of 10 young people carrying out green work and landscape maintenance. If you have any ideas for possible green projects to improve your neighbourhood please contact the Neighbourhood Co-ordinator,
pstaffell@northampton.gov.uk. These could included clearing scrubland, trimming bushes or clearing a pathway.

The Fund will also pay for a trainee park warden for Hunsbury Hills Country Park, a great success for the Friends of HHCP, and for trainee youth workers to work with the Abbey Centre.

LOOK OUT FOR DOORSTEP CRIME

Northamptonshire Police and Northamptonshire County Council Trading Standards have launched a new initiative that aims to look out for and lock up doorstep criminals across the county. And your help is needed to make it work!

Every day in Northamptonshire people are prone to falling victim to distraction burglars and rogue doorstep traders.  Most of the victims are elderly or vulnerable.

Northamptonshire Police and Trading Standards want to work with you to look out for doorstep crime in your neighbourhood and lock up those responsible.

The aim is to:

  • Set up Doorstep crime Action Networks (DAN) comprising members of the public together with public, private, third and community sector organisations.

Assistant Chief Constable Dean Smith said “Doorstep crime is often carried out by highly organised groups, who are involved in both rogue trading and distraction burglary across the country.

“Doorstep crime of any kind is despicable and often has a real impact on the victim’s sense of confidence and security in their own home.

“In Northamptonshire, we are working closely with other agencies to share information and respond to offences, which ensures that we use all the powers available to us to close the net on criminals and make this county a difficult place for them to work.

“Anyone in the community can join DAN by keeping a look out and passing on gentle reminders to help prevent vulnerable persons from falling victim to doorstep crime.”

“Cabinet member with responsibility for customers and communities, Councillor Andre Gonzalez de Savage said “Trading Standards Officers often receive complaints about poor or incomplete work carried out, high pressure, intimidating sales tactics, failure to provide written cancellation rights and substantial price increases from the original price quoted for work, with as much as £18,000 being paid for work worth less than £100.

The DAN initiative is part of ongoing efforts to crackdown on rogue trading in the county. As a county council we are committed to working in partnership to fight this issue. Our advice is always the same; if you’re not sure don’t open the door.”

A range of leaflets, door stickers and posters have been produced and a dedicated section on the Northamptonshire Police website has more details about what to look out for at northants.police.uk/lookout

Above all, the message to pass on is, if anyone has suspicions or concerns that distraction burglars or rogue doorstep traders are operating in your neighbourhood or targeting someone you know, ring us on our dedicated DAN line 0345 23 07 702

Distraction Burglary Tactics

Distraction Burglars or ‘bogus callers’ will call at a house with the intention of tricking their way inside to steal money and/ or valuables.

 - Distraction burglars may be smartly dressed and claim to be form the water board, the council, the police or health organisations.

 - The caller may be a man, a woman or even a child and they will use any story they can to try and gain access to the property.

 - They may say they need to turn off the water because of a leak, use the phone because their car has broken down, or perhaps they have lost a pet.

Rogue Doorstep Traders Tactics

Rogue Doorstep Traders will use a trade as a means to extract large sums of money from people.

 - Offering goods and services such as driveway surfacing, block paving, roofing, fascia, gardening and furniture sales.

 - They may claim you have lose roof tile or that a tree you have is unsafe and needs to be trimmed.

 - They will often give a very low quote that will increase when work begins.

 - Sometimes they will drive victims to the bank and will often come back on future occasions to get more money.

Rapping Road Safety at Abbey Primary

'Youngsters from Abbey Primary school year 6 took Road safety advice to a new level on July 13th, producing some fantastic music in a workshop organised by Doing Better For Communities. The pupils worked in groups to write lyrics, produced their own music and then recorded their raps. Their enthusiasm and hard work was a real credit to themselves and Abbey Primary!

The tunes produced will be available to all schools in the DBFC area as part of Road safety awareness work. DBFC hope this can be the first of many such themed music workshops for young people, and thanks the Youth Forum and Northants County Council for funding the project through the 'Money for Youth' scheme.

New play area for Delapre!
Young people from Delapre, Far Cotton and Camp Hill have been making a difference for children in their area.

The Doing Better For Communities (DBFC) ‘Youth Action Group’ has had a new play area installed in Cambourne Close, Delapre. This was after securing Money 4 Youth funding earlier this year.

On Friday 24th April young people from Abbeyfield and Abbey primary schools celebrated the official opening of the play area. It was a great expression of community cheer!

The group spent some time talking to local residents of all ages, carrying out a special session at the local Abbey Primary school and knocking on residents doors to get their views.

There was overwhelming support for equipment favoured by pupils of Abbey Primary School.

This should be the first of many exciting new projects, as the Youth Action Group has lots of other ideas for improving facilities and getting more activities for young people across DBFC. If you would like to be involved in the group, or would like more information about their work or about Doing Better For Communities then contact Pete Staffell (Neighbourhood Coordinator) on 01604 838598.
